Around 40 per cent of households already own an electric vehicle, making The Cape one of the strongest communities in the country for EV uptake. When combined with efficient all-electric homes and solar, households are saving around $5,000 to $6,000 per year, adding up to more than $1 million in annual savings across the community.
While EV adoption continues to grow nationally, at The Cape, low-emissions transport is already embedded in everyday life.
Electric transport in everyday life
For Nino, it was a chance to ask the kinds of questions many people still have about electric vehicles. How do they work? Are they expensive to run? What happens on longer trips? And what is it actually like to drive one?
Resident Dries explains that one of the biggest benefits is how simple electric driving becomes once it is part of daily life.
“What’s nice about an electric car is that you can charge it for free if you’re using solar. It doesn’t make noise, there’s very little maintenance, and the driving experience is awesome.”
At The Cape, this connection between homes, solar energy and transport is part of the bigger picture. Many residents are not just reducing emissions through their houses, they are using the energy generated on their rooftops to help power the way they move around.
Dries usually charges his car during the day, when the sun is shining. Some of that solar power goes directly into the car, while any excess can be used by the home, stored in a battery or sent back to the grid.
It is a practical example of how sustainable living can work in real life. The home becomes more than a place that uses energy. It becomes part of a smarter, cleaner system that helps power daily living, from lights and heating to cooking and transport.
For those wondering about longer trips, Dries says the experience is easier than many people expect. The car helps plan the journey, provides alerts when charging is needed and shows nearby charging locations along the way.
Beyond the car
Electric transport is not limited to cars. Resident Steve shares his experience with an electric motorbike, noting that he has saved around $3,500 in fuel since making the switch.
